A Diverse Group of High School Students Will Learn How to Cover Issues and News in an Inclusive Way

Columbia, Mo. (Feb. 28, 2017) — High school students from around the nation will be able to discover the fast-paced world of professional journalism during the Missouri Urban Journalism Workshop. The 7-day immersive experience will be held July 8 to 14 at the Missouri School of Journalism.

Diversity has been an historical component of this workshop since it was first offered 47 years ago. The goal is to help a diverse group of students learn how to cover issues, news and current events in an inclusive way. They will produce stories in the School’s award-winning, hands-on learning laboratories, including the Columbia Missourian newspaper; KOMU-TV, the local NBC affiliate; KBIA-FM, mid-Missouri’s NPR affiliate, as well as across multiple media platforms. Instruction will be guided by faculty experts at the Missouri School of Journalism and industry professionals.

Highlights of the workshop include:

  • Mobile Technologies: Students will learn how to interview sources, shoot video, take photos – do everything they need for their story – while they’re on location. In today’s world, journalists can work from anywhere.
  • Social Media: Students will use Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook and other social platforms to engage with the public, gather information and more for all stages of their reporting.
  • Documentary Journalism: Students will go beyond day-turn reporting and try their hand at long-form storytelling. They’ll learn new investigative and technical skills in this exercise.
  • Data Journalism: Students will dig deep into publicly-available information in government databases to discover facts and statistics. They’ll learn how to produce graphics that visualize the information for the public.
  • Lots More: Web design and production, narrative writing and story structure, other timely and current topics.

Cost for the Missouri Urban Journalism Workshop is $675, which includes most meals, lodging and all workshop activities. Some scholarships are available to those who qualify for financial need.

Students can register online, and the application deadline is April 28. A $25 non-refundable application fee (either check or money order) should be sent to:
