The Report Will Highlight Sports Reporting and Promotional Opportunities Available to Missouri Students

Columbia, Mo. (April 20, 2017) — “Inside Sports” at the Missouri School of Journalism is a new social media-video feature that will highlight the access and opportunities University of Missouri students have to tell sports stories for news or promotional purposes.

The first blog entry launched Tuesday and carries examples of students – freshmen through seniors – who are interviewing coaches, participating in high-profile press conferences, traveling to championship games and writing for national publications and sports teams. There is also news of national awards for sports writing.

Updates will be provided on Twitter @MUJschoolSports.

A YouTube video tells the story of how students can start to gain sports experience from their first days on campus. Senior Jacob Kornhauser, a sports anchor and reporter at KOMU-TV, created the video.

“Students are eager to be engaged in sports, and there are plenty of opportunities to do that at Missouri,” said Suzette Heiman, the school’s director of planning and communications. “Our professional, faculty-supervised newsrooms and agencies provide numerous opportunities and the top level of access that mirror what students will have after they graduate.”

The school’s newsrooms include KOMU, mid-Missouri’s NBC affiliate, and the Columbia Missourian, a digital-first community newspaper for the city of Columbia. There are also two agencies, MOJO Ad and AdZou, where students work on behalf of clients. All provide ongoing opportunities to report, photograph, film, edit and share, create and more for sports-related work.

Students can also report sports for The Maneater, the independent campus newspaper, as well as MUTV and KCOU-FM, outlets available to those living in the university’s residence halls. There is also marketing and promotional work through Mizzou Athletics and other organizations.

Items for Inside Sports can be sent to journalism@missouri.edu.
