Big Data and Sports, Missouri Reception: School to Host 2 Sessions at AEJMC in Chicago

The Journalism-Mass Communication Academic Conference Will Be Held Aug. 9-12

Columbia, Mo. (May 31, 2017) — Alumni, journalism faculty and students as well as others attending the Aug. 9-12 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conference in Chicago are invited to attend two sessions hosted by the Missouri School of Journalism.

“Data Journalism and Sports: The Analytics That Shape Narratives and Drive Business” will be presented from 5-6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 9, in the Great American Room of the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile.

Dan Migala, BJ ’96, will lead the discussion, and Earnest Perry, associate dean for Graduate Studies at the School, will serve as moderator.

Migala is the chief innovation officer and founder at PCG SportsDesk. He is the co-founder of a Chicago-based team marketing advisory and next-generation digital media, analytics and marketing company firm with clients such as the world champion Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Cavaliers and world-class teams in MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL and NCAA. Migala has helped design some of the industry’s most innovative revenue-generating concepts and has been honored by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown for his creative advancement of baseball promotions. Migala earned his bachelor’s degree at the Missouri School of Journalism and a master’s in sports administration from Ohio.

“We want to look into how top sports organizations are using analytics and big data to progressively drive marketing insights and incremental revenue growth,” Perry said.

Annual Missouri Reception

Dean David Kurpius will host the School’s annual reception for journalism and mass communicators attending the AEJMC conference. It will be held from 8:30-10 p.m., on Thursday, Aug. 10, in the Chicago Ballroom, 5th floor, Salon F and G, in the Chicago Marriott Downtown.

A brief program will be presented at 9 p.m. Kurpius will share an update about the School and introduce eight new faculty members. They are:

Both the Data Journalism and Sports session as well as the reception are open to AEJMC conference attendees.
