Associate Professor Stephanie Craft Receives Kappa Tau Alpha Chapter Adviser Grant
Columbia, Mo. (Nov. 25, 2008) — Stephanie Craft, associate professor at the Missouri School of Journalism, has been awarded a Kappa Tau Alpha Chapter Adviser Research Grant in the amount of $750. She is the first Missouri chapter adviser to receive one of the grants.
Craft will use the grant to study how journalists critiqued and reported on the news media coverage of school shootings in the United States, using clips of national television news coverage available at the Vanderbilt Television News Archive. Media coverage of the media, sometimes called journalism about journalism or metacoverage, has become increasingly important as public concerns about mainstream news performance have increased. Craft’s research is part of a larger study that is aimed at exploring the dynamics of media self-reference in stories that tend to produce a media frenzy. The results will be published at the conclusion of the study.
Kappa Tau Alpha, the national honor society for journalism and mass communication, conducts the grant program to provide research assistance to chapter advisers and to recognize their continued efforts to promote excellence in scholarship. KTA was founded at the University of Missouri in 1910 and has chapters at 92 universities and colleges. Keith Sanders, professor emeritus, serves as executive director.
