Kelsey Allen Places in Top Ten of Hearst College Feature Writing Competition

Columbia, Mo. (Nov. 30, 2009) — Missouri School of Journalism student Kelsey Allen placed in the top ten in the college feature writing category at the 50th annual William Randolph Hearst Foundation‘s Journalism Awards Program held in San Francisco recently. She receives a $500 scholarship, and a matching grant will be given to the school.

Allen’s article titled “Skate Escapes” was published in the Columbia Missourian. The story profiles Columbia’s only roller derby team, the CoMo Derby Dames. Allen is a senior studying magazine journalism and psychology.

There were 142 students participating from 75 universities in the program’s first competition of this academic year. Jennifer Sizemore, vice president/editor in chief, MSNBC.com and executive producer, NBC News; Jeff Cohen, executive vice president and editor, Houston Chronicle; and Peter Bhatia, executive editor, The Oregonian in Portland judged the competition.
