Latina Journalist Cecilia Alvear to Share Her Experiences and Advice with Aspiring Journalists
Columbia, Mo. (March 10, 2010) — Latina journalist Cecilia Alvear will speak at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 18, in the Fred W. Smith Forum, Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism. The University of Missouri chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) and the Hispanic American Leadership Organization (HALO) are sponsors of the event.
As a 25-year veteran journalist and producer with NBC Network News, Alvear has covered major international stories, including the Barcelona Olympics, the Colosio assassination as well as the riots and earthquakes that have affected the Los Angeles area in recent years. Cuban political leader Fidel Castro is just one of the many influential world figures she has interviewed. Alvear is also the former national president of NAHJ, an organization that is dedicated to encouraging the success of Hispanic journalists.
Alvear will be presenting her history in covering international and national news, tips for aspiring journalists in broadcast, and the importance of diversity in the media. Contributing to Alvear’s presentation will be George Lewis, a correspondent with NBC News.
The presentation is one of several events and activities during the annual HALO Week, all aimed at increasing an awareness of the Hispanic community on campus and in the community. The School’s NAHJ chapter promotes media diversity by promoting fair coverage for and about Hispanics and Latinos in the media and in the city of Columbia. The executive board members are President Cecilia Garza, Vice President Monica Chavez, Treasurer Rob Abel, Secretary Dana Aleman and Historian Shannon Montanez. The chapter was founded in 2005 by Carolina Escalera, BJ ’08.
