Columbia, Mo. (Dec. 15, 2010) — New business journalism opportunities – 10 summer internships and a $10,000 scholarship – will be available next year to Missouri School of Journalism students.

Ten new summer internships at both traditional and non-traditional media companies will be offered. The students will work with experienced business journalists and have a chance to fine-tune their skills in a variety of reporting and editing techniques. The names of participating companies and application details will be announced in January.

One incoming junior will be selected for the new $10,000 Donald W. Reynolds Business Journalism Scholarship. The student may be eligible for a similar scholarship during the senior year.

“These programs will help ensure that tomorrow’s business journalists truly understand the complexities of corporate and government finances and are able to help citizens understand the issues,” said Randall Smith, the Donald W. Reynolds Endowed Chair in Business Journalism. Smith will oversee both programs.

These two new initiatives are an outgrowth of Smith’s professorship and teaching. Since coming to the school in 2009, Smith has proposed two new courses in the business journalism field and held two symposiums.

“There is much hiring in business journalism despite these troubling economic times,” Smith said. “It’s an area that more students are starting to contemplate, even as freshmen.”

The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation will provide funding for both programs. Headquartered in Las Vegas, Nev., it is one of the largest private foundations in the U.S. and has made grants totaling more than $110 million through its National Journalism Initiative.

Additional information about both programs is available from Smith.
