Three-day Missouri Photojournalism Event to Feature a Dedication, an Educational Program and an Alumni Reunion
Columbia, Mo. (March 16, 2011) — A dedication, a multimedia educational program and an alumni reunion will comprise a three-day event in photojournalism at the Missouri School of Journalism on Thursday through Saturday, April 7, 8 and 9.
“This promises to be a great opportunity to listen to some of the best creators of multimedia working today and for all of us to ‘touch home base’ by honoring one of the pioneers of contemporary photojournalism,” said David Rees, chair of the photojournalism faculty.
Dedication ceremonies for the Angus and Betty McDougall Center for Photojournalism Studies and the Cliff and Vi Edom Photojournalism Lab will be held at 4 p.m., on Thursday, April 7, in Lee Hills Hall. The program will recognize the contributions of these distinguished educators to the photojournalism field. It also will acknowledge the many gifts that have both established the McDougall Center and made the renovation of these photojournalism area projects possible.
Presenters will include Rich Clarkson, of Rich Clarkson and Associates of Denver, and a longtime faculty member of the Missouri Photo Workshop and adviser to Pictures of the Year International. A reception in the McDougall Center Gallery will follow the program. On display will be a selection of 16×20 vintage prints made by McDougall’s hand and a video of him discussing his work. The presentation also will include a glimpse of work that will be added to the Missouri Photojournalism Archive by photographers Alan Berner, BJ ’75; Kim Komenich, MA ’07; and Rita Reed, MA ’84. Reed is an associate professor of photojournalism at the School.
“Multimedia Vision,” a daylong program on Friday, April 8, will showcase the top award winners in the Pictures of the Year International and the College Photographer of the Year competitions. Presenters will include Brian Storm, MA ’97, whose MediaStorm created the project, “Undesired;” Whitney Shefte, of The Washington Post, who was photographer, editor and videographer for “Coming Home a Different Person;” Leslye Davis, POYi Multimedia Portfolio winner; and Rachel Mummey, CPOY Photographer of the Year and winner of the best individual multimedia story or essay. A reception will be held in the reception area of the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute, amid an exhibit of POYi and CPOY winning photographs.
The Missouri Photojournalism Reunion on Saturday, April 9, is a grassroots effort by alumni to connect with their school and will include alumni from the past four decades. The group will sponsor a review of multimedia work and still photography in the Cliff and Vi Edom Photojournalism Lab.
