MU Tap Day Honors 21 Journalism Students and a Faculty Member

Columbia, Mo. (April 28, 2011) — During the recent 84th annual Tap Day on the University of Missouri campus, 21 Missouri School of Journalism students and one faculty member were tapped into five of the six University of Missouri’s secret honorary societies.

Current members chose the new “taps” based on exemplary academic performance, extracurricular activities, scholarship, leadership and service. The new members’ identities were secret until the ceremony. Those honored from the School were the following:

QEBH
QEBJ, founded in 1898, is the oldest recognized secret honor society at the University. Its founder desired to unite exemplary campus citizens based on their selfless dedication to the University and excellence in personal character.

  • Jayme Gardner, a sophomore studying convergence journalism, from Lawton, Okla.
  • Zach Parolin, a junior studying strategic communication, from Parkville, Mo.
  • Kiara Goodwin, junior studying strategic communication, from Bentonville, Ark.

Mystical Seven
Mystical Seven honors those seven men and women of the University who have displayed selfless leadership and exemplary character.

  • Raha Obaei, a junior studying magazine journalism, from Northbrook, Ill.
  • Adrianna Amato, a junior studying radio-television journalism, from Chandler, Ariz.
  • Honor Tap: Charles Davis, associate professor and facilitator of the Media of the Future initiative for Mizzou Advantage

LSV Society
LSA was formed in 1908 by a group of women students concerned about the status of women on the University campus and in society as a whole. Each year the organization recognizes the most outstanding upper-class students who, through their individual service to the University and the community, continually strive to promote and improve the status of women.

  • Kathleen Pointer, a senior dual major in print and digital news and women’s and gender studies, from Leawood, Kan.
  • Shannon Whitney, a senior journalism major, from St. Louis

Mortar Board
Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, while promoting service to the University, and encouraging lifelong contributions to the global community.

  • Megan Stroup, junior studying magazine journalism and history, from Hilmar, Calif.
  • Lakeisha Williams, a junior studying strategic communication, from Chicago

Omicron Delta Kappa
Founded nationally on Dec. 4, 1914, ODK members have achieved a high standard of achievement in collegiate activities, and as representatives of ODK, encourage others to strive for attainment in scholarship, athletics, government, journalism and the performing arts.
