ELIZABETH BRIXEY is a professor on the Journalism Professions faculty in the Missouri School of Journalism and a city editor overseeing coverage of K-12 and youth issues at the Columbia Missourian. Brixey joined the school in August 2003. In 2017, she won the O.O. McIntyre Professorship for Teaching Excellence awarded by the Journalism School and, in 2019, the Maxine Christopher Shutz Award and Lecture for Distinguished Teaching from the University of Missouri. In 2022, she won the university’s William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence and is a recipient of the Reynolds Faculty Fellowship. Brixey has been recognized as a mentor to more than 50 students at MU’s Honors Convocations and as a mentor to 11 Mizzou ’39 winners. She coordinates the annual Atwater Writing Contest in memory of former Journalism Dean and faculty member James Atwater and his wife, Patty, who taught copy editing. Brixey has two journalism degrees from the University of Missouri: a bachelor’s in 1985 and a master’s in 2013. Before joining the Journalism School, Brixey was a reporter, copy editor and assigning editor for 17 years at the Wisconsin State Journal. She attends Calvary Episcopal Church in Columbia and plays the horn in Show-Me Brass. She is obsessed with peonies.
