ANNA MARIE ROMERO is a native of Santa Fe, New Mexico and has been in broadcast news since 1982. Romero received her degrees in journalism and foreign languages (Spanish Literature) from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. She also has a minor in political science. Romero is bilingual (English/Spanish) and has worked in both commercial and public radio and television in New Mexico, Texas, Missouri and across the border in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Romero’s media experience ranges from videotape editor to news director. She’s also worked as a media person for a state senator and taught at the University of Texas/El Paso Communications Department. Romero was the managing editor of National Public Radio affiliate, KBIA-FM, but most recently took over two programs at the J-School; Romero is the executive director of the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association, a program that works with middle school and high school journalism teachers and students, and she is director of the Missouri Urban Journalism Workshop, which is sponsored by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund and others. Romero had been the broadcast coordinator for the Missouri Urban Journalism Workshop since 1990. As a J-School faculty member, Romero has chaired the Multicultural Development Committee and served on the Curriculum Committee. Romero is actively involved in MU programs and organizations that promote diversity and is past president and founder of the MU Hispanic/Latin American Faculty and Staff Association. Romero has received several awards and honors during her career and is active in the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association and the Journalism Education Association. Romero served on the advisory board for The National Center on Disability and Journalism based in Arizona, and is a Fellow at the University of Missouri’s Cambio Center for research on Latinos and changing communities in Missouri. Besides teaching J2100 News, the first required writing-intensive news class at the journalism school, Romero is the faculty adviser for the student MU chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
