Douglas McClain, BJ ’91
Doug McClain, BJ ’91, CDME, has more than 30 years of marketing experience in the publishing, hospitality and tourism industries. He currently serves as Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer for Newport Beach & Company, the economic development, community and destination-marketing organization that markets Newport Beach, California, around the world. In this role, he oversees all marketing, branding, media relations, advertising, digital marketing, travel trade and research for the company’s five business units: Newport Beach TV, Celebrate Newport Beach, Enterprise Newport Beach, Dine Newport Beach, and Visit Newport Beach, Inc.
Most recently, he was Vice President of Marketing & Communications for Visit Tampa Bay, and prior to Tampa, Florida, he oversaw marketing programs for Visit KC. In Tampa and Kansas City, he led both destinations through a complete rebranding and repositioning process that included stakeholder input sessions, qualitative and quantitative perception studies and complete brand rollouts, website redesigns and new advertising campaigns. He began his career in Chicago, where he held key marketing positions at Rand McNally & Co., Preferred Hotels & Resorts Worldwide and Hyatt Hotels & Resorts. At Hyatt, he led the company’s efforts to be the first hotel chain on the Internet in 1994. That year, he launched one Web page with all 16 Hyatt resorts in the early years of the Internet. He also led the branding for many other Hyatt initiatives including Hyatt’s first vacation-ownership product, Hyatt Vacation Club, and its first timeshare resort in Key West, its first stand-alone casino in Elgin, Illinois, and Michael Jordan’s restaurant in Chicago. He began his career in journalism at the American Marketing Association and Advertising Age magazine in Chicago. He has a bachelor’s degree in magazine journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia and an MBA from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. |
