An advocate for the rights of Native Americans, Giago founded the Lakota Times in 1981 with the motto “Standing up for the peoples’ right to know.” In addition to serving as the editor-in-chief and publisher of the Lakota Times, he writes a syndicated column that appears in 20 daily and weekly newspapers. Giago, who was a Harvard University Nieman Fellow in 1990-91, has received numerous awards fro his contributions to journalism and human rights.
