Liz Lucas has been practicing and teaching data journalism since she graduated with a master’s degree from the Missouri School of Journalism. 

She worked in newsrooms as a data reporter and editor on investigative teams, reporting on health, politics, and the environment. She was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Investigative Reporting and the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, and has won awards from SABEW, AHCJ and ONA. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, NPR, Fortune, Bloomberg, USA Today, STAT, the Chicago Tribune, the Daily Beast, Huffpost, and Gatehouse Media. 

She was a training director at Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), where she developed and taught training courses in data analysis and investigative reporting. She has trained thousands of journalists in the U.S. and abroad. She also serves on the board of Orion Magazine, a 40-year-old nonprofit magazine that features journalism and creative writing at the intersection of nature and culture, and is a certified Missouri Master Naturalist. She explores and adventures in Missouri’s various ecosystems with her partner and dog. The cat stays home.
