John Murphy

John Murphy joined the KOMU 8 News team after graduating from the University of Missouri – Missouri School of Journalism in May 2023. He co-anchors the weeknight 10 p.m. newscasts with Evie Allen and serves as a content creator and reporter for several KOMU 8 specials, including the Decision 2024 Election Report.

Murphy graduated from the Missouri Military Academy in 2020 and has called Mid-Missouri home for over seven years. While a student at Mizzou, he worked part-time at KOMU 8 for almost two years as an anchor, reporter, and producer.

Murphy is passionate about connecting with the community and believes in comprehensive public affairs reporting that highlights the voices of people affected by the issues we face. He has covered impactful stories on topics such as foreign-owned farmland in Mid-Missouri, the effects of an abortion ban on women in the state, and Missouri’s unique judicial override power in capital murder cases. His work earned him recognition as a finalist for the Hearst Journalism Awards and as a runner-up for Investigative Story of the Year by the Missouri Broadcasters Association. 

Originally from Independence, Murphy is an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Mizzou Tigers fan. During football season, you can find him at nearly every home game at Faurot Field. Outside of football season, he enjoys cooking and hiking in pleasant weather.
