Lisa Krantz

Lisa Krantz, Ph.D. ’24, is an Assistant Professional Practice Professor in Photojournalism at the Missouri School of Journalism. She has close to 30 years of professional photojournalism experience, including 24 years at newspapers.

Her research focuses on the intersection of journalism and trauma, particularly how journalists cover mass shootings, a topic she began exploring as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University (2019-2020) and as an Ochberg Fellow with the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma.

Since leaving daily news to pursue her doctoral degree, she has continued photographing for news organizations including The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN, Reuters, and The Wall Street Journal.

Krantz is part of The Washington Post team that won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize in National Reporting for the series “American Icon,” and she is a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist in feature photography. She has won the Pictures of the Year International (POYi) Community Awareness Award and placed in POYi’s Newspaper Photographer of the Year category. World Press Photo, NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism, and the Scripps Howard Awards have also recognized her work.

Her research interests stem from her lived experience as a photojournalist covering stories involving five mass shootings and other stories involving trauma. Her dissertation, “Embodying an Ethic of Empathy: Journalism’s Intersection with Victims’ Families, Survivors, and Community Members After the Mass Shooting in Uvalde, Texas,” was the recipient of the 2025 Penn State Davis Ethics Award, which annually recognizes the best ethics-related dissertation successfully defended each year in the fields of communication and media. Her research has been published in Journalism Studies, Journalism Practice, and Digital Journalism.

Krantz was an assistant professor at the University of Montana School of Journalism, teaching courses in visual journalism and ethics from 2024-2026. She has taught as an adjunct professor at Texas A&M-San Antonio and Florida Gulf Coast University.

She serves on the Board of Directors for the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) and served as assistant director for the College Photographer of the Year (CPOY) competition from 2022 to 2025. She has a psychology degree from Florida State University and an MA in photography from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.
