Matt Beckwith has always wanted to pursue broadcast meteorology as a career. When he was a kid, he would stand in front of his computer screen and pretend to give the forecast for hours on end. Now, it feels like life has come full circle. Join him in the evenings for KOMU 8 News to get the latest forecast.
Beckwith grew up in the Kansas City area but didn’t visit mid-Missouri until he decided to tour Mizzou, hoping to pursue a degree in Atmospheric Science. After being in town for about half an hour, a tornado warning was issued. That warning was the only sign he needed to know that he was in the right place. It’s an honor and a privilege to keep mid-Missourians safe and calm when weather is at its worst.
He started at KOMU 8 as a student doing weekend weather in 2016 and worked his way up to being a full-time forecaster while finishing his degree in Soil, Environmental, and Atmospheric Science from the University of Missouri. After a few years as the full-time midday meteorologist, he was promoted to Chief Meteorologist in 2022.
When he’s not working, you can usually find him looking up at the sky hoping to catch one of the many gorgeous sunsets mid-Missouri has to offer. You can also catch him enjoying the many wonderful local restaurants in the area and spending time with his best friend (dog) Finn.
