Former Assistant Professor Stan Abbott Dies
Columbia, Mo. (July 30, 2015) — Stan Abbott, formerly an assistant professor at the MU School of Journalism, died Monday, July 27, 2015, at a hospice near Detroit.
Abbott worked for the Columbia Missourian from 1983 to 1989 as a city editor. Previously, he had been executive editor of the Anchorage Daily News in Alaska for nearly 20 years. After he left the Missourian, he was head of the McClatchy news service in Sacramento, California. Later, he worked for newspapers in California and Minnesota.
He was a 1965 graduate of California State University, Los Angeles. In 1999, he received one of the university’s Distinguished Alumni Awards for his service as a newspaper editor and journalism educator. He earned a master’s degree from the MU School of Journalism in 1987.
Survivors include a daughter, Ambre Abbott Ellenson, of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; a son, Robson Abbott, of Anchorage, Alaska; and two grandsons.
