Missouri School of Journalism receives 376 gifts on Mizzou Giving Day, more than any other school or college
Gifts totaled more than $200,000 in support of hands-on learning, community reporting and affordable education
COLUMBIA, Mo. (March 10, 2023) — The Missouri School of Journalism received the largest number of philanthropic gifts of any school or college at the University of Missouri during the annual Mizzou Giving Day, which ran March 8-9. At 376 gifts totaling $201,039, funds raised will go toward a number of initiatives aimed at accessibility, affordability and supporting the needs of the School’s professional news outlets and agencies.
“The generosity of our donors is a key reason why we are able to deliver a world-class education to tomorrow’s leaders in journalism and strategic communication,” said David Kurpius, dean of the School of Journalism. “The Missouri Method demands opportunities for hands-on, experiential learning, and thanks to this support, we can continue to expand those opportunities and lead the industry toward a bright future.”
Funds raised from Giving Day support efforts like the Journalism Scholarship Fund, the Missouri Method Endowment (which directly supports the School’s news outlets and agencies and helps the One Newsroom — the space in Lee Hills Hall where students and staff from each newsroom work together — provide resources for students to practice rigorous and collaborative reporting) and the Journalism Diversity and Inclusion Fund, among others.
Thanks in large part to philanthropic gifts, the School awarded 800 scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students over the 2022-23 academic year, creating consistent opportunities for students of all backgrounds and financial means.
“Donors from all over came out in force to support the work of our faculty, staff and students, which is proof of the School’s impact not just on the local community, but on the world stage,” said Colin Kilpatrick, senior executive director of Advancement at the School. “The Mizzou Mafia is a real force for good all across the country and beyond, and we’re so thankful for their willingness to give back for the benefit of a new generation.”
While Giving Day is the university’s campus-wide campaign to inspire gifts through gift-matching opportunities and challenges, those wishing to make a donation to the School of Journalism can do so at any time here. The School will also celebrate its annual Founder’s Day on September 14, when alumni are invited to show their support with a gift of $19.08 in honor of the year of the School’s founding.
