In Memoriam: Charles W. Cleworth
Columbia, Mo. (Oct. 17, 2003) — Charles W. Cleworth sat next to then-Missouri Journalism Dean Milt Gross while on a business trip many years ago. By the time the plane landed, Mr. Cleworth noted that he “felt strongly about your school of journalism both by reputation and by my all too short but enlightening conversation with that fine man.” Mr. Cleworth later created the Charles W. Cleworth scholarship at the School, funded through American Business Media.
Mr. Cleworth passed away on July 27, 2003. He worked in business-to-business publishing for three decades. Mr. Cleworth formed Industry Media, which produced publications and events focused on the plastics industry. In 1980, he co-founded Multichannel News, a cable weekly, with Fairchild Publications/Capital Cities Media. In 1987, Mr. Cleworth acquired Radio Communications Report, which he sold to Crain Communications in 1992. He also served as ABM chairman.
Mr. Cleworth’s legacy lives on through his generous scholarship, by helping outstanding journalism students who have a special interest in business-to-business media. The Missouri School of Journalism family extends sympathy to his family.
