About the New York Program

The Missouri School of Journalism's New York Program offers Missouri Journalism students a unique program of study, a network of colleagues, faculty guidance and summer residence in the media capital of the world, New York City.

Missouri's Summer in New York Program
New York City is the media capital of the world, home to major national television networks, national newspapers, world headquarters of advertising agencies and public relations firms and major photo agencies. These Missouri Journalism students take in the sights of the city at night.

Our affiliation is with the City University of New York, located in Times Square. New York City is home to major national television networks, national newspapers, world headquarters of advertising agencies and public relations firms and major photo agencies. It is our classroom.

Students attend seminars with New York editors, producers, journalists and media executives. They meet Missouri School of Journalism alumni working in New York City and explore one of the world's most amazing cities. The New York Program is open to graduate students, MU juniors and seniors. Students from any sequence can take part in the interdisciplinary program for up to nine credits.

Students will complete a course with a Missouri School of Journalism faculty member while working as an intern in New York City.

Eligibility

You must be a junior, senior or graduate student at the Missouri School of Journalism.

You should not have participated in the New York Program in a previous summer. Students with a minimum of 3.0 GPA who have completed the first course in their sequence are eligible for admission to an internship program. All students should be in good academic standing.

Fees

The cost of the New York Program includes housing, internship placement assistance and internship program supervision. Other costs to consider include flight, transportation within New York City, meals and entertainment.

Missouri's Summer in New York Program
Missouri Journalism students will serve an internship in New York while taking an additional journalism class to earn a total of nine hours of credit over the summer session.

Internships

You will be serving an internship in New York City for the length of the program. You are ultimately responsible for securing your own internship but are highly advised to contact Phou Sengsavanh, who can assist you in setting one up. There is no set timeline for applying and securing an internship, but it is best to start as early as possible (ideally during the fall semester) as many New York City media outlets fill up their internship placements at the beginning of the calendar year.

How to Apply

You must fill out the New York Program application form and submit a non-refundable application fee of $500, made payable to the Missouri School of Journalism. Note that the application requires a two-page essay, an official transcript, two letters of recommendation (one from a journalism faculty member and one from an employer) and a resume. The application should be turned in to 76 Gannett in a manila envelope by March 3, 2009.

It also is helpful to attend one of the New York Program Information Sessions where you can speak to the director of the program or to the director of career services before applying.
