“It’s a great opportunity for students from all disciplines to interact with industry professionals and learn about the ‘professional culture’ of the sports world,” said Phousavanh Sengsavanh, assistant director of career services at the Missouri School of Journalism. “The sports industry is large, and we believe that this career fair will help unify all the aspects of the industry while giving our students the chance to see where their journalism skills apply.”
On Wednesday, April 20, students who have registered for the two-day event can attend a reception from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Tiger Lounge in the Reynolds Alumni Center. Students will have the opportunity to meet recruiters in a relaxed setting to find out more about the sports industry.
The fair will officially begin April 21 with more than 10 sports-related companies recruiting for various positions in print, broadcasting and online media. With resumes and work samples in hand, students can openly interview with the recruiters from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will also have a chance to network at a luncheon that afternoon. Several financial institutions will also attend the fair in order to find students with team-player mentalities and a strong sense of discipline.
“The fair really promotes convergence not just in terms of traditional print or broadcast media, but also in terms of account management, public relations or event sponsorship that accompanies the sports industry,” Sengsavanh said.
Approximately 100 students university-wide are expected to attend the fair. The following companies will be in attendance: ESPN, The Sporting News, Relay Sponsoring & Event Marketing, the St. Louis Rams, NBC ActionNews (Kansas City), Fox Sports Net Midwest, Missouri Department of Transportation, Learfield Sports, MU Athletics Department, Federated Insurance, Northwestern Mutual and Target.
