Columbia, Mo. (April 1, 2011) — The final rankings in the Associated Press Sports Editors national sports journalism contest were announced yesterday. Missouri School of Journalism students placed in four categories in the under-30,000 circulation division.
Placing first in the Breaking News category were master’s student Joan Niesen, seniors Len Goldman, Will Guldin and Patrick Sweet and Dieter Kurtenbach, BJ ’10, for “Derrick Washington Suspended Indefinitely from MU Football Team.” The article was published in the Columbia Missourian.
Alex Ruppenthal and Joan Niesen placed second and third, respectively, in the “Explanatory Reporting” category.
In the “Feature Writing” category, Len Goldman placed third and Robert Mays earned an honorable mention.
“This is, obviously, a very talented group of young journalists with promising futures,” said Greg Bowers, associate professor and sports editor of the Missourian. “As students, they’re winning honors that professionals would be proud of.”
The winners will be honored at the APSE annual awards banquet on June 25 in Boston.
