Photojournalism Senior Receives Society of American Business Editors and Writers Award
Columbia, Mo. (March 20, 2012) — The Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) has recognized a Missouri School of Journalism photojournalism senior with a “Best in Business” award. The competition honors excellence in business and financial journalism across all news platforms.
Robson Abbott received an honorable mention in the student category for “Les Bourgeois Becoming a Force in Missouri Wine Industry.” To develop his story Abbott toured the new $2.5 million, 14,000-square-foot production facility to the Rocheport, Mo., winery. He also contacted other vineyards in the state and spoke to individual farmers who provide grapes to Les Bourgeois. The article was published in the Columbia Missourian in July 2011.
Of Abbott’s article, the judges wrote: “Good example of a multimedia package that consists of a strong print story and a slideshow of photos that correspond to an interview with the winery owners. Lots of good reporting here, particularly the industry leaders and other winery owners. Readers come away with a good sense of Les Bourgeois Vineyards and how it fits into the larger Missouri industry.”
Marty Steffens, the school’s SABEW endowed chair, encouraged Abbott to enter his story in the competition.
“It’s great to see our students tackle complicated business issues,” Steffens said.
