Fall 2016 @Mizzou: Big Opportunities in Beijing
By Margaret Teson
Columbia, Mo. (Dec. 12, 2016) — Senior Jacqueline LeBlanc interviews Karolina Pliskova, the world’s sixth-ranked women’s tennis player, at the National Tennis Center in Beijing. LeBlanc traveled to Beijing with five other students to cover the 2016 China Open, an international tennis tournament that attracts the world’s best players. LeBlanc conducted one-on-one interviews with the athletes, filed daily stories for the China Open website and attended press conferences with competing players and coaches. The China Open opportunity is one of the Missouri School of Journalism’s many study abroad programs.
At one of the press conferences, LeBlanc interviewed Andy Murray, British Olympic gold medalist and winner of the 2016 China Open. LeBlanc, who is studying strategic communication, believes she gained valuable international journalism experience covering the tournament. “I’m interested in sports, and I want to do something that involves promoting diversity in sports media, so going abroad was relevant to those goals,” LeBlanc says.
