To apply to the Missouri School of Journalism master’s program, applicants are required to submit some materials online and some by mail.

Submit Online:

Submit by Mail:

  • Transcripts
    • Applicants are required to upload an unofficial copy of all transcripts to their online application prior to submitting the application. We do not require official copies of transcripts for the application. Unofficial copies of transcripts/mark sheets for all baccalaureate degrees or equivalents and any post-graduate degrees or course work should be uploaded to the Educational History section of your MU Graduate School Application Form.
      • If you are an international applicant, you are only required to upload the English-language version of your transcripts/mark sheets.
      • For more information on how to upload transcripts to your application, please view the documentation section of the MU Graduate School website.

International Students

For international students there are two more required materials:

  • TOEFL or IELTS Test Results
  • Affidavit of Support
    • International applicants are required to complete the Affidavit of Support to be officially admitted to the MU Graduate School.
    • International applicants are required to complete the Affidavit of Support or provide a letter of support from a University of Missouri graduate degree program before immigration documents can be issued.
      • See the International Center’s Estimated Expenses charts to get an idea of the cost of attending Mizzou.
    • You do not need to complete this form as part of your application. However if you are admitted, you will need to submit this form to receive your I-20.
      • Please note that the Graduate School issues the I-20 form, not the School of Journalism.

For permanent residents (those of international birth who hold a “green card”) the TOEFL or IELTS is also required.

Application Deadlines

Deadlines are firm. All application materials must be received by the following deadlines in order for your application to be considered. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered by the Journalism Graduate Admissions Committee.

Deadlines for application for the Two-Year and Five-Year Programs are:

  • January 1: Entry in fall (August)
  • September 1: Entry in spring (January)

Questions about your application?

  • Alternate Names? Please notify us in advance if any application materials may arrive under different names so that we are sure to include all of your application materials in one file.
  • Samples of Work: The admission committee will be considering a great number of applications and will have very little time to review samples of work. The best way to provide work samples is to include a link or links to examples of your photos/ writing /design samples. Such links should be included in your resume.
    • Remember: Prior education or experience in journalism is not required for admission to our program.
    • If you must upload individual photos, please limit your submission to three to five photos. The committee will not review more than five photos. Photo samples must be in one of the following formats: .doc, .wpd, .rtf, .xls, .pdf, .docx, .xlsx or .txt.
    • Please do not send us CDs/DVDs. We do not have a way to include those with your application materials.
    • Samples of work should be uploaded to the Supplemental Information area in the MU Graduate School application form.
  • Letters of Recommendation:
    • Make sure you ask for reference letters well ahead of the deadline. We need all of the letters submitted by that time.
    • You may submit your completed application prior to all of the letters being on file, and we encourage you to do so. This allows us to review all of the other portions of your application while waiting on your letters.
  • Transcripts: Once transcripts or other application materials are received on campus it will take a minimum of 10 business days for confirmation to appear in the Graduate School’s application system.

Is my application complete?
