NPR Honors Radio-TV Journalism Senior Alexandra Olgin with Its National Youth Media Award
Columbia, Mo. (April 17, 2013) — Alexandra Olgin, a radio-television journalism major at the Missouri School of Journalism, is the 2013 recipient of the NPR National Youth Media Award.
She received her award at the inaugural Korva Coleman Community Champions Awards Luncheon in Phoenix on April 5, which was hosted by Friends of Public Radio Arizona and NPR-member station 91.5 KJZZ. Coleman, who grew up in the area, emceed the event.
National Youth Media Award applicants were judged on their commitment to honoring and advancing journalism’s time-honored principles. High school and college students between the ages of 15-23 were eligible for consideration.
“It’s exciting to see a smart, talented student journalist like Alex rewarded for her hard work by the public radio network outside of our newsroom,” said Janet Saidi, KBIA-FM news director. “Alex works alongside a team of professional producers in our newsroom, and she jumps right in to cover politics, legislative issues, elections and a range of stories like a pro.”
Olgin, from Princeton, N.J., reports for NPR-member station KBIA-FM in Columbia, where she has covered a wide range of issues including legal and legislative developments. KBIA uses its newsroom as a working lab for Missouri Journalism students and is one of the most successful public radio stations in the U.S.
Her experience includes reporting science news for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute SciXchange fellowship website, producing at Reuters in Brussels and interning with the investigative and special projects unit at WFLD, the Fox affiliate in Chicago.
Olgin also has served as a researcher and writer for Newsy.com, an on-line video source for national and international news analysis; interned for Fox Business Network in New York City, and reported for KOMU-TV, mid-Missouri’s NBC affiliate and the only university-owned commercial television station in the U.S. that uses its newsroom as a working lab for students.
