Kyle Palmer Wins $10,000 Scholarship
Columbia, Mo. (June 23, 2004) – Kyle Palmer, a senior broadcast news student at the Missouri School of Journalism, is one of the “Top Ten” Scripps Howard Foundation national scholarship winners.
Earlier this year, Palmer won an individual award in the Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio-Television News Directors Association. His entry in the Sports Features category focused on the hype surrounding Missouri Tiger quarterback Brad Smith. Palmer was one of ten University of Missouri juniors selected for early membership into the Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. He is a daily anchor at KBIA-FM, a part-time professional position that helps to finance his college tuition.
“Kyle is both an exceptional student and reporter. He is a hard worker and a dedicated journalist who has a promising future ahead of him,” said Catherine Welch, KBIA news director.
Top Ten scholars are selected based on academic achievement and a demonstrated interest in journalism as a career. They are required to submit personal essays on long-term goals and a portfolio of work and recommendations. An independent panel of professionals judges the entries.
Students at the School receive real-world media experience as part of the curriculum. Broadcast news students train at KOMU, the only university-owned commercial television station in the United States that uses its newsroom as a working lab for students, and at KBIA, which is annually ranked as one of the nation’s leading public radio stations.
