Orientation Overview

Welcome to the start of your academic journey! Orientation is your first step toward success, designed to give you the tools and insight to navigate your degree path with confidence. You’ll gain valuable guidance for planning your courses, discover ways to get involved on campus, and start building a foundation for a rewarding career. Together, we will set a strong foundation for your future achievements.

Incoming J-School students should plan for two orientation visits: one for Mizzou Summer Welcome (all majors) and one for Journalism School’s Advising (Journalism/major specific).

Mizzou Summer Welcome

All day in-person session or half-day virtual session

Please note that ALL incoming MU students must attend a Mizzou Summer Welcome session. This program is coordinated by New Student Programs. During your Mizzou Summer Welcome session, you will:

  • Learn what to expect in your first weeks at Mizzou and get a preview of college life and resources available on campus.
  • Get to know other Tigers and your future classmates.
  • Meet your Summer Welcome Leaders, who are current Mizzou students ready to answer your questions and share their insider knowledge of campus.
  • Visit the J-School for an overview of the Jouranlism degree, Missouri Method opportunities in our newsrooms and agencies, and best practices for student success.
  • Monitor your email for communications from New Student Programs regarding registration for Mizzou Summer Welcome.

Journalism Advising Session

1.5 hours to a half day

During these sessions, students will participate in a small-group workshop with advisors and peers to review degree requirements and course options, followed by a one-on-one meeting with an Academic Advisor to review your schedule and enroll. “Everyone was so nice! I even stayed an extra 15 minutes just talking to the peer coaches about Mizzou and what to expect. I feel even more excited now and super grateful for everyone who helped me.”
