Missouri School of Journalism faculty, students, alumni win awards, present work at annual AEJMC conference

Neff Hall, Walter Williams Hall and the journalism arch at the Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, Missouri.

Missouri School of Journalism faculty, students and alumni will present 68 peer-reviewed research papers at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) annual conference in Philadelphia, Penn., August 8-11.  In addition, 78 Missouri journalism scholars will serve as moderators, discussants, and panelists during the four-day conference.

Among the top awards for journalism faculty, students and alumni, doctoral student Teresia Nzau and Professor Amy Simons earned top distinctions.

Nzau won the 2024 Inez Kaiser Graduate Students of Color Award, which recognized her research work and commitment to diversity in academia. The award is named for Inez Kaiser, the first Black woman to lead a PR company with national clients.

“Coming to the University of Missouri has really opened my academic world: I’ve published three articles in well-known journals, I have two book chapters and I have some manuscripts in progress,” Nzau said. “I’m in a competitive place.”

Simons has been selected for the 2024-25 class of AEJMC’s Institute for Diverse Leadership in Journalism and Communication (IDL), a yearlong administrative training program dedicated to fostering a varied pool of leadership talent in journalism and higher education.

That won’t be Simons’ only esteemed professional development opportunity of 2024; in late July, she took part in the Scripps Howard Leadership Academy at Syracuse University. The program immerses a select group of participants in hands-on applications of leadership skills.

“I’m building and exercising the skills to be not just a good manager, but also a good leader — someone the members of our school community want to follow,” Simons said. “And I want to gain a better understanding of what it is to hold a leadership position in a school of journalism, in a higher education setting; the different layers that come into play there.”

The IDL cohort will meet for the first time at the AEJMC conference. The conference will also honor Stacey Woelfel, a professor emeritus who retired from the School of Journalism in 2021. Woelfel won the 2024 Edward L. Bliss Award for Distinguished Broadcast Journalism Education.
