AMANDA HINNANT's research focuses on health journalism, information seeking, sociology of news, and magazine trends. Hinnant is part of the team working on the Missouri Health Literacy Enhancement initiative, which is funded by a grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health. Hinnant received Top Faculty Paper with María Len-Ríos in the AEJMC Science Communication Interest Group in 2008. Recent publications include:

  • "The Cancer on Your Coffee Table: A Discourse Analysis of the Health Content in Mass-Circulated Women's Magazines," Feminist Media Studies (in press).
  • "Digital Inequality: Differences in Young Adults' Use of the Internet," with Eszter Hargittai, Communication Research (2008; 35, 602-62).

Hinnant teaches courses on magazine scholarship, journalism and democracy, as well as magazine reporting and writing. Her professional experience includes writing and editing for Real Simple and Glamour magazines. She is a member of the Association for Education in Journalism and the International Communication Association. Hinnant earned her doctorate from Northwestern University, her master's degree from the Missouri School of Journalism, and her bachelor's degree from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. She joined the Missouri School of Journalism magazine faculty in 2006.
