Global Journalist and a Healthcare Publication Created by Magazine Journalism Students Take Top Awards in a Statewide Contest

Columbia, Mo. (March 16, 2009) — Publication professionals from around the state of Missouri attended the 2009 Ranly Awards ceremony and gala recognizing outstanding magazines, newsletters, and Web sites, e-zines and e-letters during the Missouri Association of Publications 5th Anniversary Publishing Summit at the Holiday Inn Select Executive Center in Columbia on March 5 and 6.

Among the winners are Global Journalist, an international news magazine published by the Missouri School of Journalism and edited by Patricia Smith, adjunct professor, with oversight by Stuart H. Loory, and Giving, a healthcare publication created by magazine journalism students. Loory serves as the School’s Lee Hills Chair in Free Press Studies.

Global Journalist’s summer issue was named Best Entire Issue among Educational Institutions, and its Web site, Globaljournalist.org, was named Best Homepage. Global Journalist was named a finalist in four other categories.

Giving, a publication of Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, designed, written and edited by journalism students who were enrolled in a capstone-publishing course taught by John Fennell, captured four awards in the healthcare division of the competition. Those prizes include: Best Writing Entire Issue, Best Design Entire Issue, Best Single Written Article and Best Cover. Fennell is the Meredith Chair in Service Journalism at the School.

The Ranlys are named in honor of MAP’s founder, MAP emeritus board member and professor emeritus of the Missouri School of Journalism Don Ranly. A professor of journalism for 31 years at the School, Ranly is an author of articles and books on writing and editing, is an award-winning teacher, and is a sought-after speaker by companies and professional associations across the country.

The Publishing Summit is an annual continuing education, professional development, and networking event of MAP, a statewide nonprofit professional association of producers of print and electronic publications as well as businesses that provide products and services to publishers in Missouri and the region. Faculty members from the School have been deeply involved in MAP since the founding of the organization five years ago. Two faculty members sit on MAP’s board and eight faculty members were presenters at this year’s summit. Several other presenters this year were Missouri Journalism alumni.
