Columbia, Mo. (Dec. 3, 2017) — MOJO Ad hosted a Resume and Portfolio Best Practices event at the Missouri School of Journalism for students to gain insights from industry professionals into what makes a resume and portfolio stand out. The event, held on Nov. 30 in Fred W. Smith Forum, kicked off the annual MU Strategic Communication Career Fest.

Four alumni from across the country participated in a video panel with junior, senior and graduate journalism students. The event gave students the chance to hear from professionals in their interest area and receive feedback from alumni working in the industry. Participants included Dane Canada, senior art director at Energy BBDO in Chicago; Dylan Connell, Americas regional advisor for public and government affairs at ExxonMobil; Jackie Hade, senior content designer at Intuit in the greater San Diego area; and Emily Scott, brand strategist at Horizon Media in Los Angeles.

Panelists offered their advice on various components of the job search process. “We’re in the business of selling things, including yourself,” said Scott. “So, you need to stay true to your brand and yourself. Don’t feel afraid to stand out.”

In addition to overall tips on how to market yourself in the professional space, panelists also discussed important elements of a successful resume and portfolio that they’ve learned throughout their careers.

“A good portfolio is the work that gets somebody excited about you,” said Canada.

MOJO Ad will sponsor three more events leading up to the Career Fest on Feb. 8, 2018, including an individual resume and portfolio review with industry professionals, a “What I Wish I Knew” virtual panel and a recruiter Meet and Greet.
