HEATHER ISHERWOOD is professional practice professor with 17 years of professional writing, editing and management experience at national magazines and regional newspapers. She came to the university in 2013 and teaches various editing class. 

She is the editorial director of Vox Magazine where she works with students on the monthly city magazine and its digital and mobile content. The quality of student work at Vox is consistently recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, including awards for best features every year since 2014, as well as multiple recognitions for best overall magazine and best website. 

Previously, Isherwood was the executive editor of the Reader’s Digest Home & Garden magazine group, overseeing editorial direction and growth for five national consumer magazines with a combined circulation of more than 5 million. She also was executive editor of Fresh Home magazine from 2009-2011, and editor of Birds & Blooms, the nation’s largest birding and gardening magazine, from 2004-2009. There, Isherwood also held posts as managing editor and associate editor. She started her journalism career from 1996-2000 at Community Newspapers, Inc., a group of 23 suburban weeklies in Milwaukee, working as a reporter, regional editor and managing editor.

Isherwood earned a master’s degree in journalism in 2017 and a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1995, both from the Missouri School of Journalism.
